Evaluating Nickel Mesh for Demanding Industrial Filtration

Assess nickel mesh for industrial filtration against a defined operating envelope: the material grade, complete process chemistry, temperature history, mechanical loading, and construction of the finished filter. A useful selection decision should connect those conditions to documented test results. This guide sets out the questions to resolve before specifying mesh for demanding liquid or gas service.

Define the filtration duty before selecting a material

Start with a short process specification. Identify the particles to be retained, the required outlet quality, and whether the mesh will serve as the separation layer, a protective screen, or support for another medium. Describe liquid-solid separation and gas-solid filtration separately, with an acceptance test appropriate to the intended duty.

  • Process stream: list the liquid or gas composition, concentration ranges, contaminants, and expected changes between batches.
  • Operating conditions: record normal and maximum temperatures, exposure duration, start-up and shutdown conditions, and any cleaning or regeneration cycle.
  • Flow and pressure: specify the required flow, system pressure, and the permitted pressure difference across the filter in both normal and reverse-flow operation.
  • Solids: describe particle sizes, shape, concentration, and the expected loading between cleaning or replacement.
  • Acceptance criteria: define retention, pressure drop, allowable material degradation, and the evidence needed to approve the assembly.

For mesh dimensions and particle-retention geometry, see the nickel mesh mechanical-filtration guide. The focus here is whether the selected material and assembly suit the proposed service conditions.

Confirm the grade and the complete chemical environment

Ask for the material designation and supporting composition record for the supplied mesh. Confirm the materials of any frame, support, joint, and seal as well. Keep the proposed construction identifiable throughout sample evaluation and ordering.

Special Metals identifies Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 as distinct grades. Its corrosion guidance treats individual chemicals and operating conditions separately. For Nickel 200 in sulfuric acid, it reports increased corrosion with aeration, rising temperature, and oxidizing salts. A general description such as “acid resistant” leaves important selection questions unanswered. Source: Special Metals Nickel 200 and 201 bulletin.

Provide the full process composition for a compatibility review, including impurities and cleaning chemicals. Ask the reviewer to identify the evidence used, its exposure conditions, and any gap between that evidence and the intended process. Where composition varies, specify the range to be evaluated. Do not assume that a result for a single pure chemical approves a mixed industrial stream.

Assess temperature together with grade and exposure conditions

The Special Metals bulletin prefers Nickel 201 over Nickel 200 above 315°C and discusses carbon-related embrittlement in Nickel 200. It also describes specific high-temperature Nickel 201 uses while warning about sulfur-related embrittlement. These distinctions support a grade- and environment-specific assessment; they do not establish a temperature rating for a HuiRui mesh filter. Source: Special Metals high-temperature guidance.

A proposed 900°C duty needs evidence for the identified grade, atmosphere, exposure time, mechanical load, and finished construction. Ask the responsible engineer to document the intended continuous duty, short excursions, and cycling separately. Include the attachment method and all supporting components in that review. A material reference alone should not be used to approve the complete filter or promise unchanged filtration performance.

Review the loaded filter and its assembly

Request the allowable differential pressure at operating temperature for the specific assembly and each flow direction. Published metal-filter specifications illustrate the need to qualify pressure data by temperature, direction, and material; their numerical ratings belong to the products described. For the proposed design, ask for an assembly drawing showing the active mesh area, unsupported spans, supports, edge restraint, joints, and sealing arrangement. Have the designer review normal flow, the intended loaded condition, cleaning pulses, reverse flow, and credible process excursions. Obtain separate confirmation of the housing and element limits rather than treating a system-pressure figure as the mesh rating.

Specify a test program that records flow and differential pressure with a clean element and through representative solids loading. Define the stop criteria before testing. Include inspections for deformation, damaged joints, and leakage around the element. Where cleaning is planned, repeat the agreed retention and flow checks afterward.

Require evidence that matches the proposed duty

A qualification package should identify the material lot, sample construction, test fluid, temperature, flow conditions, duration, and acceptance criteria. Ask for the measured results and any limitations on applying them to the production assembly. Keep corrosion screening, mechanical evaluation, and filtration performance as distinct checks in the package.

For liquid immersion screening, ASTM G31-21(2025) provides guidance on test variables and reporting. Its scope excludes specific evaluation of localized attack, environmentally assisted cracking, and solution-flow effects. Use it within that scope and arrange additional evaluation where those issues matter. Source: ASTM G31 public scope.

For retention testing, agree on the challenge material, particle-size range, upstream and downstream sampling, flow conditions, and calculation method. Record performance over the agreed loading interval. If the process requires control of material released from the filter, include that requirement in the test plan. Approval should refer to those defined results, rather than an unspecified “high efficiency” claim.

Move from a candidate mesh to an approved specification

  1. Screen the material. Review the specified grade against the full process and cleaning chemistry, including the intended temperature history.
  2. Resolve the assembly design. Obtain the drawing and documented operating limits for the complete filter, with responsibilities for the housing, supports, and seals clearly assigned.
  3. Agree on qualification. Set acceptance criteria and a representative test plan before comparing samples or quotations.
  4. Record the approved configuration. Keep the material identity, drawing revision, operating envelope, and test reports together. Reassess changes that fall outside the evaluated conditions.

To identify candidate formats, review HuiRui’s Nickel Sintered Mesh and Small-hole Nickel Wire Mesh catalogue entries. Before requesting a quotation, prepare the process specification, required form, quantity, drawing, and documentation requirements. Ask the supplier to state which requirements the proposed product meets and which need further evaluation. A catalogue listing is a starting point for this review; it does not establish suitability for the proposed temperature, chemistry, pressure loading, or filtration target.
