Titanium Woven Wire Mesh: Mesh Count, Wire Diameter and Opening

Titanium woven wire mesh is made from titanium wire woven into a cloth. Buyers often ask for “titanium mesh” when they mean this woven structure, a plate-derived opening pattern, a coated electrode mesh, or even a titanium fiber felt. Those forms are specified differently. A useful enquiry starts by naming the structure, then recording grade, mesh count, wire diameter, weave and finished size—without waiting for a complete laboratory list before the first contact.

Name the structure before the numbers

Woven titanium wire mesh uses intersecting wires. HuiRui lists titanium woven wire mesh with titanium grades Gr1 and Gr2, mesh counts from 2 to 400, plain, twill or Dutch weave, and supply as rolls, pieces or sheets. Typical mesh counts shown on the product page include 5, 15, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150, 200, 300, 325 and 400 mesh. Roll widths and lengths can follow listed options or a custom cut.

Plate mesh and punched or expanded openings are not the same construction. They are described by sheet thickness and opening geometry rather than a woven mesh count. Fiber felt is a bonded fiber network specified by porosity and sheet thickness, not by wires per inch. Foam is a cellular metal sheet with its own porosity range. Choosing the wrong form on a drawing is a common reason samples do not match the intended part.

If the assembly is a PEM porous transport discussion, public technology notes treat titanium transport layers as a family that can include felt, mesh and sintered morphologies. That still does not make woven mesh interchangeable with felt on a purchase order. Keep the drawing’s structure name, then use the matching product page. For felt porosity and thickness language, see HuiRui’s titanium fiber felt PEM guide. For electrolyzer-type framing, see ALK, PEM, AEM and SOEC.

Mesh count, wire diameter and opening

Mesh count is the number of openings per unit length along a stated direction. Wire diameter is the diameter of the wire that forms the cloth. Opening (clear aperture) is the unobstructed gap between adjacent wires. Mesh count alone does not fix the opening: the same count with a thicker wire leaves a smaller gap.

For an ideal regular square weave with the same round-wire diameter in both directions, a nominal opening in millimetres can be estimated as:

nominal opening (mm) ≈ 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter (mm)

The result must be positive. A zero or negative value means the combination is inconsistent for this square-weave model, or that the cloth is not a regular square opening. Dutch weave, unequal warp and weft counts, and coated or deformed meshes need their own description. The formula is a design estimate, not an inspection certificate, filtration rating or finished-cell performance claim.

On HuiRui’s product FAQ, mesh is explained the same way: under the same wire diameter, a lower mesh count means a larger aperture and a higher mesh count means a smaller aperture. Record the count unit (usually per inch), the wire diameter in each direction when they differ, and the weave. A related square-weave discussion for nickel cloth is in the nickel mesh open area and porosity guide; that page is a method note for a different base metal, not a titanium substitute.

Weave and surface condition

Plain, twill and Dutch weaves are different cloth constructions. A Dutch weave should not be ordered from a square-opening calculation alone. Surface condition also matters for some duties: the product page notes black titanium mesh (wire with a graphite coating retained) and bright titanium mesh (graphite emulsion removed). State which surface the project needs rather than assuming “titanium mesh” implies one finish.

Coated titanium mesh is a separate line item

Platinum-coated or iridium-coated titanium mesh combines a titanium substrate with a coating requirement. In an enquiry, list the substrate geometry and the coating request on separate lines: grade, opening or mesh description, wire or strand dimensions, overall size, then coating material, faces and how thickness or loading will be defined if already known. See platinum-coated titanium mesh and iridium-coated titanium mesh. Do not infer coating presence, loading or service life from the word “titanium mesh” alone, and do not treat a coating thickness range on a product page as a verified stack result for every cell design.

What to send for a quotation

You do not need a complete specification to contact HuiRui. Share the application, approximate size, a sketch or a drawing first. The items below are optional references when you already have them:

  • structure: woven wire mesh, plate/punched mesh, coated mesh, felt or foam;
  • titanium grade (for woven mesh, Gr1 or Gr2 if known) and any documentation requirement;
  • mesh count and count unit, wire diameter, weave, and target opening if known;
  • finished width × length, roll preference, or a cut-part drawing;
  • surface condition (black or bright) if it matters;
  • quantity, sample versus production intent;
  • for coated parts: coating type and any thickness or inspection notes already defined by the project;
  • medium or duty notes only insofar as they affect material choice (electrode mesh, current collector, filter screen, PEM-related sample, and so on).

Availability, tolerances and sample terms are confirmed for the selected specification. A mesh-count label without wire diameter, weave and size is usually not enough to freeze a production cut.

Practical takeaway

Specify titanium woven wire mesh by structure, grade, mesh count, wire diameter, weave and finished size. Use opening as a derived geometric check for square weave, not as a stand-alone filtration or cell rating. Keep plate mesh, felt and coatings on separate lines. Send the application or drawing you already have; missing optional fields can be discussed before quotation.
